Product Description

Steel tooth tricone bit, also named milled tooth tricone bit, is a mainstream rotary rock drilling tool. It consists of three freely rotating cones mounted on the bit legs. The cutting teeth are machined integrally from the cone body (not separate tungsten carbide inserts). During drilling, the cones roll independently; steel teeth gouge, scrape and shear rock strata to break formations.

Features 

  1. Integral milled steel teeth

    Teeth are forged and machined together with cones. Tooth surfaces are overlaid with wear-resistant hardfacing material from tooth crest to root to resist abrasion. Custom tooth profiles (long aggressive teeth / compact teeth) are available for different geology.

  2. Multiple bearing options

    Supplied with open roller bearing or sealed journal bearing configurations to fit various drilling media and working conditions.

  3. High penetration rate (ROP)

    Long tooth design brings strong cutting aggressiveness, achieving faster drilling footage in suitable strata than TCI bits.

  4. Economical cost

    Lower manufacturing cost compared with carbide insert bits, offering low cost per drilled meter in soft–medium formations.

  5. Standardized specification

    Manufactured strictly in accordance with API Spec 7-1. Cover wide size range from 3.5 inch to 26 inch, corresponding IADC codes: 111–337 for steel tooth series. Standard API REG thread connections.

    Differences Between Steel Tooth Tricone Bit & TCI Tricone Bit

    1. Cutting Tooth Structure (Core Difference)

    Steel Tooth Bit (Milled Tooth Bit)

  •    Teeth are directly milled out from the cone steel body as one piece

    • Surface welded with wear-resistant hardfacing alloy only

    • Tooth shape is limited by cone forging processing

  • TCI Tricone Bit

    • Holes pre-drilled on cones, hard tungsten carbide inserts pressed in separately

    • Carbide inserts have ultra-high hardness, various shapes (spherical, conical, wedge)

    • Replaceable tooth performance design for different rock hardness

      2. Wear Resistance & Service Life

    • Steel tooth: Low wear resistance; teeth wear down rapidly in sandstone, quartz, abrasive layers, short footage per run

    • TCI insert: Tungsten carbide far harder than steel; resistant to abrasive rock, much longer service life, fewer trips to change bits

      3. Drilling Speed (ROP)

    • Steel tooth: Better gouging & scraping effect; faster penetration in soft sticky formations (clay, mudstone, salt, loose soil)

    • TCI insert: Hard inserts crush hard rock well, but cut slowly in pure soft plastic strata, easy bit balling in thick clay

  • Soft to medium, low-abrasion rock: clay, shale, mudstone, chalk, salt rock, coal, soft marl, topsoil overburden Not fit: siliceous sandstone, granite, chert, hard dense dolomite
  • TCI Tricone Bit (IADC 3XX, 4XX, 5XX, 6XX, 7XX, 8XX series)

  • Medium-hard, hard, highly abrasive formations: medium/hard sandstone, limestone, basalt, igneous rock, interbedded hard strata, deep reservoir sections

    5. Cost

    • Steel tooth: Simple processing, lower production cost, cost-effective for shallow short footage drilling

    • TCI insert: Complex machining + expensive tungsten carbide raw materials, higher purchase cost

      6. Common Failure Modes

    • Steel tooth: Tooth abrasion, tooth thinning, reduced penetration speed; integral tooth cannot fall off easily

    • TCI insert: Insert breakout, tooth loss under severe impact; insert wear slower when intact
